Do not Study Grammar Rules!

Try to picture this scene in your mind: you are in a quiet room with a pencil in your hand and a notebook. It’s the time for you to make some exercises of grammar rules in English. you try to organize the right tenses of the verbs in a way that it makes sense with the subjects ... the time goes by and you feel like you understand what you are doing-“It’s enough! It’s time for me to relax and watch a movie”- You think. You turn on the television and find a good movie, which is being broadcast only in English, and then you start watching it, but you realize that you cannot fully understand the movie, how frustrating!.

What do you think about the former story? Could it be that you needed to study harder? Or would you think that you should go to an institute or a school to learn how to speak and understand English? Well the answer for this questions is, no! You don’t need to go to a school or study grammar rules to learn English, in fact, when you focus on grammar, you destroy your English learning.

Most of the people that study English for a long time with the old same methods of schools just get the same results, they get stuck when they try to speak or express themselves in English, their accents don’t sound natural  and they are not able to understand native English speaking people.

The reasons for these results are really simple, first than all, we have to remember that English is a language, it is not like mathematics, and you don’t need to use boring formulas to learn how to speak English, what you really need is to use your ears, the more you listen to English, the more you will understand and make the language yours. Grammar will come automatically.

Think about when you speak on your native language, you never think about verbs or tenses or the subjects of the sentences that you are going to say, no! What your brain does is just say things, the words just come out from the mouth and whatever you say makes sense.

The brain makes the language goes out of the mouth perfectly because you have heard your native language so many times that it is natural for you now, so if you want to speak English fluently and understand it 100% you must listen many, many times what you hear in English.

My recommendation for you and because of my own experience, is not to repeat boring recordings with the pronunciation of some words. That is so boring!  You have to listen to funny and interesting things; you must download interesting and fun mp3 articles or watch nice movies or TV shows, and a little tip from my experience is that if you liked one chapter of a TV show or if you like a movie very much, watch it many times, REPETITION IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Perhaps after reading this article you could think, “What if I don’t even understand a single little word of a TV show or movie that I watch in English?” Then my advice for you is repetition and patience, may be the first times you could get a little help from the subtitles, but make sure the subtitles of the movie or TV show you watch are in English, this is really helpful.

That is the right way for succeeding on learning to speak English.

REMEMBER: DO NOT STUDY GRAMMAR RULES, JUST FOCUS ON LISTENING.
