Accents in
English can seem difficult for most people who don’t speak English, but of
course, we all think sometimes that it would be pretty cool if we could speak
English just like native people do. Well, there are good and bad news for
you, and I’ll start by telling you the bright side of this article:
The good news:
There’s a
common question for all of us, the learners: “Can I get an accent in English?”
the answer for this question is yes! You can get an accent in English, actually,
you are able to end up speaking like an American or an English person or an
Australian, but first than all you need to make this a personal goal for you,
it has to become a real thing! Just picture the scene of you talking and expressing
yourself in English like a native English person (The accent you want).
The bad news:
Getting an
accent in English is not an easy job, it requires time and it’s even harder
when you don’t live in an English speaking country, but remember: your progress
in becoming a fluent speaker depends on you, it’s all on how much time you
spend listening to English. It is not like if you were going to speak like a
native immediately, you need time!
The key to get an accent:
Think for a
minute about what schools offer to you, they make you spend a lot of money and
what you learn is mostly grammar rules, and we already know that this is not
the right way to learn how to speak English, the key for fluent English and to
become near-native when talking is free and available to everyone; the key is, the children secret, which is listening. The more you listen to English the
more you will improve your speaking, this is the same thing children do and
they always end up speaking natively, so here is what you have to do to get an
accent in English:

Listen to
English as much as possible.
|
Repeat what you hear many times, until you can understand 100% of what you hear.
|
When you feel comfortable, repeat what you hear out loud.
|
Repeat the intonation of what you hear, notice how the native speakers change their tone, volume and the emotions they try to express and imitate them.
